Recently, the Hong Kong Ballet has announced the performance schedule of the 2024/25 dance season. In November 2024, Gangba will start a tour of Beijing and Macau, in which the original dance drama "Alice in Wonderland" will be on stage at the National Centre for the Performing Arts.
"Alice in Wonderland" premiered in 2018 and is the award-winning work of Gangba's artistic director Wei Chengtian. It gathers international creators such as Liz Vandal, costume designer of Cirque du Soleil, stage designer James Za, and composer Matthew Pierce. They boldly integrate dance, puppet play and other elements to recreate on stage the classic images of Mr. White Rabbit, Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatter and other classic images from Carroll's original story and the wonderful world of imagination. "We hope to present the vibrant side of Hong Kong to mainland audiences through this work," said Li Yixuan, executive director of Gangba. In the 2024/25 dance season, the dance company will celebrate the 45th anniversary of its establishment. "It is very meaningful to be able to perform the new classics of the dance company in a national venue like the National Center for the Performing Arts."
In addition to the tour, Gangba will also premiere four large-scale plays in the 2024/25 season: the adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz" from the fairy tale adopts novel immersive stage effects and art technology; the resident choreographer Hu Songwei, the famous designer Ye Jintian and other artists jointly created the highlight "Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai", which combines Chinese aesthetics and modern style; Colombian-Belgian choreographer Ochoa's dance drama "Freda" tells the legendary life of Mexican painter Freda Kahlo; artistic director Wei Chengtian and South African artist Charla Gan reinterpret the ballet classic "Giselle", and the guest designer Kaplan, who has won the "Benoit Dance Award", will work with new set costumes Search for new expressions.
In addition, a number of international ballet stars and Hong Kong-based artists will also join hands to present "45th Anniversary International Ballet Superstars", "The Nutcracker" with the theme of Hong Kong culture, and "Ballet Children's Fun Carnival" with interactive experience to explore "Alice in Wonderland" will also be launched one after another.
